5S is a scientific approach that can be used for maintaining a methodical workplace.
It is a strategy for organizing a workplace for efficiency and effectiveness and to ensure enhanced safety and security.
Though suffering massive destruction at the second world war, japan was subsequently able to rise as an industrial power of the world. This was made possible due to adoption of such management principles like quality, leadership and teamwork by all institutions of the country. This brought about rapid and extraordinary development in all sectors in japan. The main strategy adopted by them in bringing about this change was the 5S concept. The basis or foundation of productivity is 5S. Even today, the 5S concept is being used by japan as a strong management tool. In same way a large building needs a strong foundation to sustain it, the proper implementation of 5S is imperative for the enhancement of productivity of any institution. Therefore, the National Productivity Secretariat has drawn up plans for the implementation of 5S certification program in every institution in the country for the first time in Sri Lanka, having considered the need and importance of 5S concept.
The first audit is conducted by an audit group of the National Productivity Secretariat within a month of receipt of application together with the relevant fees.
The second audit is conducted after the expiry of the period granted for carrying out necessary improvements as identified in the first audit. (Minimum period is 02 weeks and the maximum period is 10 weeks) The period of validity of certification is 02 years.
If a shortcoming is observed after the follow up audit conducted one year after the certification, the certificate will be cancelled. The National Productivity Secretariat is vested with full powers in this regard.
