Demonstration Project Of Energy Concervation at Wijeya Newspapers Ltd - Hokandara Press Complex (DMP-ECWNL)

 

The APO has selected NPS as the principle implementing agency for the Development of Demonstration Company on Productivity implement on energy management at first time and this is convey success stories on the development and implementation of energy management initiatives.NPS had been selected Wijeya Newspapers Ltd as the model factory for implementing this project.

When focusing on energy uses of Hokandara factory, the average contribution from electricity is 97 % and diesel is 3 %. The average monthly energy consumption for these operations are 250,000 kWh and the maximum monthly kVA demand is 1500kVA. Wijeya Newspapers Limited Hokandara is calculating their EnPI (Energy Performance Indicator) according to the requirement of ISO 50001, which is measured by the units of kWh per ton.

Before the implementation of this energy conservation project, the average ENPI in May 2016 was 196.9 kWh/Ton and after the implementation of this project, it was decreased into 129.2 kWh/Ton in September 2016.The secret behind the company of achieving this level is as a result of the Demonstration Project of Energy Conservation at Wijeya Newspapers Ltd. Hokandara Press Complex (DMP-ECWNL), which was conducted at Wijeya Newspapers Ltd. with National Productivity Secretariat (NPS) Sri Lanka and Asian Productivity Organization (APO). Also the technical support was given by Energy Conservation Center Japan.

 Analyzing the Result after Implementing of No/ Low Cost Options under Category-1 in ProjectImplementation Plan

The Project was started in May 2016 with the APO and ECCJ expert visit at WNL, then the project Implementation Scheduled was developed with help of APO and ECCJ experts at WNL Factory. Soon after finalizing the Implementation schedule,the Category-1 (No/Low Cost Options) implementation has been introduced with providing training and awareness programme to the WNL staff and Employees. Then the daily electrical consumption monitoring system was introduced and records were taking by the electrician and evaluated by the responsible offer and results were discussed weekly basis with energy management team and heads of the departments and other responsible officers at WNL.
